The Spanish government has seized Libya leader Muammar Gaddafi’s assets in Spain, including a large plot of land in the Costa del Sol, the Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
This includes more than 6,000 hectares of land the dictator owns in La Resinera (Benahavis) in which he planned to build a golf course and almost 2,000 homes.
The land was purchased in 1995 by Libya’s central bank-owned Libyan Arab Foreign Bank.
Additionally, the authorities said they will also investigate if there are any bank accounts held by the Libyan regime in Spain.
The move is in line with an EU ruling to seize the Libyan regime’s assets, and follows similar action by the governments of Britain, Austria and Switzerland.
Spain was also expected to suspend the majority of the activities carried out at the Libyan Embassy here, although this does not mean it has broken diplomatic relations with the North African country.
Spain’s Foreign Affairs Minister Trinidad Jimenez reportedly ordered the Spanish Ambassador to Libya, Luis Garcia Cerezo, to remain in the country until the last Spanish national has left.
Meanwhile, new political party ‘Iniciativa Marbella San Pedro’ has requested the Junta de Andalucia also seize the Marbella homes of Gaddafi’s relatives, which are used by his children, and the properties they own in Granada, Nerja, Sabinillas, Sevilla and Sotogrande.

Marbella place to buy
Have you ever dreamed of owning a “place in the sun”?
If so, what area’s are you going to consider?
Will it be Florida in America, the West Indies, Dubai, Australia??
The major consideration for any of the above is not only the flight times to get there but also the time difference once you arrive. If you fancy a long weekend in one of these destinations you will need another couple of day’s rest when you return! Not convenient and not practical.
With this in mind you really need to consider Europe which is only a short flight away and just one hours time difference.
Where in Europe should I consider investing not only my money but also my time when I get there? The obvious answer to this question time and time again is the only and only Marbella.
Now it is well documented that in recent years Marbella has suffered greatly from the administration that was in power for some time. The good will and name of Marbella was tarnished and it has taken the great work of the new Mayor, Angeles Munoz, to clean up the area and to drive it forward.
There have been many residential schemes that have been built in and around the Marbella area that did not have the necessary planning consents. The current administration have taken time and effort to re-visit such schemes and have now applied the planning consents and a local plan going forward (PGOU) so it is clear now where residential scheme’s can or cannot be built.
There will be no worries now about purchasing an apartment in Marbella that has wonderful green views, only to find that in a year or two your distant seaview has been obstructed by a four storey apartment building.
The centre of Marbella is literally on the beach, with a wonderful paseo extending through to the millionaire’s playground known as Puerto Banus.
Marbella central is one of the most enchanting resorts along the Costa del Sol, with a picturesque old quarter full of interesting little restaurants, notably Orange Square, and many shops to explore.
Thanks climate, Costa del Sol Holidays and sunbathing on the beach is virtually a year-round option.
With many flights every day into Malaga airport from most parts of the UK, Marbella really does have everything to offer.
Costa del Sol Holidays
UNREST in Egypt and Tunisia has led to a boost in holiday bookings to the Costa del Sol. There is a direct relationship between the political upheavals in the Arab countries and a rise of between 30 and 40 per cent for online bookings on the Costa del Sol for this Spring and Summer, according to Sonia Tello, director of Tui Hotelbeds.
Most of the bookings are coming from the British market, although experts predict a boom in bookings from elsewhere in Europe.
Over the past week there have been violent demonstrations in Cairo and other locations across Egypt and particularly in central Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor and Suez.
“We advise against all but essential travel to Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor and Suez,” the British Foreign office warned on Tuesday. “The situation is unpredictable and may change quickly,” it said.
An estimated that 11.9 million international tourists visited Egypt in 2009, bringing with them €7.7 billion in revenue, according to the UN World Tourism Organization.
More than 1.3 million British Nationals visited Egypt in 2009, Egyptian Ministry of Tourism data shows.
The vicepresident of Spanish Travel Agents Association (AEDAV) President is more conservative forecasting increases in bookings of between 2 and 3 per cent over the next few weeks.
Many tour operators have reacted quickly and diverted tourists heading to Tunisia and Egypt to the Costa del Sol already.
The Costa Blanca and Canary Islands are also benefited from the need to relocate tourists and find new destinations.
Meanwhile, tourists in Spain who planned to visit Egypt and Tunisia are now making other plans, since the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommended postponing all but strictly necessary trips to the countries, and are also avoiding other North African destinations such as Morocco, Jordan or Syria.
Instead, they are looking to Turkey and Croatia for their holidays.
Some tour operators in Spain have cancelled all trips to Egypt for the rest of February and part of March, but hope that by Easter the situation will be back to normal.
